• Two weeks of true cycling adventure

We invite you to join a cycling expedition through the Pamir Mountains, offering a unique adventure in the raw and spectacular landscapes of Tajikistan.

Our route leads through the Bartang Valley, one of the wildest and least-traveled roads in the region. Known from legendary cycling stories, this remote route takes us deep into high-mountain terrain where daily life follows the rhythm of nature, the flow of the river, and extremely challenging living conditions. We will visit traditional Pamiri villages, cut off from the rest of the civilized world. Staying in guesthouses, local homes, and tents, we will experience the hospitality of local communities as well as the power and majesty of untouched wilderness.

We will tackle the demanding crossing of Kok Jar Pass (3,800 m a.s.l.) and ride onto the Murghob Plateau, where vast open spaces and lunar landscapes stretch along the Kokulbel River valley. The shores of Lake Karakul will offer time for rest and acclimatization at nearly 4,000 meters above sea level. The highlight of the expedition will be reaching Ak-Baital Pass, the highest point of the iconic Pamir Highway, at 4,655 meters above sea level.

Thanks to the support vehicle, we ride light, without carrying our luggage. A local cook will accompany the group, preparing nourishing meals throughout the journey. We will cover nearly 450 kilometers by bike in one of the most remote regions on Earth. This cycling expedition through the Bartang Valley is designed for those seeking a true and uncompromising cycling adventure.

CYCLING THROUGH THE BARTANG VALLEY EXPEDITION ITINERARY:

DAY 1-2
Flight to the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe. After landing, a direct transfer by 4x4 vehicles to Gorno-Badakhshan, the autonomous province of Tajikistan, which covers nearly half of the country’s territory, while being home to only about 2% of its population. Following the gorge of the border river Panj, we reach the small town of Rushon. Overnight in a local guesthouse.

DAY 3
Our first cycling day is a distance-based warm-up, but already on this day, we will feel the call of real adventure. We begin riding through the wild and almost completely isolated Bartang River gorge. We start above 2000 m above sea level, and our first overnight stay is planned in a small guesthouse in the village of Khijez or Siponj, depending on how we feel and on route conditions.

35-45 km, ⬆ 600-700 m / ⬇ 400-450 m

DAY 4
We continue deeper into the Bartang Valley. As we learn more about the daily challenges faced by local residents, we will also experience how demanding our own conditions become. This section of the Bartang Valley is a true cycling challenge. Depending on water levels, we may encounter partially flooded roads or washed-out bridges, requiring detours, carrying bikes, or even fording the river. In return, we are rewarded with scenery unlike anywhere else in the world. We experience life in a place where the river and the surrounding mountains dictate all the rules. Overnight in a guesthouse in the small settlement of Basid.

45-55 km, ⬆ 800-900 m / ⬇ 600-700 m

DAY 5
Although we have been climbing steadily for two days, today brings our first serious ascent, reaching 2900 m above sea level. This is the day when we truly feel the atmosphere of a high-mountain adventure. Overnight in a guesthouse in Savnob at 2700 m above sea level. The inhabitants of the Bartang Valley are exceptionally warm and hospitable people who, despite harsh living conditions, always welcome travelers with open hearts, sharing home-cooked meals, hot tea, and stories of their extraordinary mountain world.

55 km, ⬆ 1450 m / ⬇ 1050 m

DAY 6
Today, we enter the landscapes of Tajik National Park. We say goodbye to the Bartang River and, from an impressive confluence of mountain rivers, continue our cycling ascent above 3000 m above sea level toward the small settlement of Ghudara. Overnight in a simple guesthouse in the heart of the village.

35 km, ⬆ 800 m / ⬇ 440 m

DAY 7
We ride into the Tanymas River valley. Our main objective is crossing Kok Jar Pass at 3800 m above sea level and reaching the Murghob Plateau, one of the highest permanently inhabited regions in Central Asia. Numerous river crossings and a long, demanding climb lie ahead, but despite the difficulty, this will be one of the most scenic days of the expedition. We set up camp at 3700 m above sea level and spend the night in tents under the star-filled Pamir sky.

50 km, ⬆ 1150 m / ⬇ 350 m

DAY 8
Welcome to the roof of the world. Today is a full day of slow, steady riding across the vast Murghob Plateau and through the scenic Kokuyilbel River valley, flowing here at an altitude of 3800-3900 m above sea level. This is a day of endless space and breathtaking views of the surrounding 6000-meter peaks. The immensity of the landscape is overwhelming and impossible to pass by indifferently. Overnight in tents in the Pamir wilderness at 3900 m above sea level will be an unforgettable experience.

60 km, ⬆ 550 m / ⬇ 400 m

DAY 9
Our gradual acclimatization proves extremely valuable on this day. After two nights in tents and nearly 270 km on rough Pamir gravel roads, we return to asphalt. The reward for this demanding section is reaching the village of Karakul, located on the shores of the lake of the same name at 3914 m above sea level. On a clear day, the impressive Peak of Avicenna at 7134 m above sea level can be admired from here, just 30 km away. We spend this exceptional night in a guesthouse at nearly 4000 m above sea level, enjoying well-earned rest after the intense days in the Bartang Valley.

50 km, ⬆ 350 m / ⬇ 400 m

DAY 10
A rest day combined with further acclimatization at 4000 meters above sea level. Time for recovery, walks, and local exploration of the picturesque Lake Karakul. The lake has a fascinating history, as it was formed by a meteorite impact around five million years ago, creating a massive crater 52 km in diameter. The surroundings are defined by a lunar landscape with vast, desert-like expanses. A perfect place to pause and fully appreciate the power and scale of nature.

DAY 11
After rest, we begin the final stage of our cycling adventure, crossing Ak-Baital Pass at 4655 m above sea level. This is the highest point of the legendary Pamir Highway and the culmination of the entire expedition. The climb itself is not steep, with the actual ascent limited to the final 7 km, but at this altitude, it is tackled very slowly. For this reason, flexibility is essential regarding the total distance covered on this day. From the summit, extraordinary panoramas await, and after descending to a more comfortable altitude, we set up our final campsite for the night.

85 km, ⬆ 900 m / ⬇ 800 m

DAY 12
Our final cycling day is a long descent along the Pamir Highway to Murghob, the highest town in the Pamir Mountains. Here begins our inevitable return to civilization. After more than a week in the remote Pamir wilderness, this town of just over eleven thousand inhabitants will feel like a major metropolis. Restaurants, shops, fuel stations, lower altitude, and the comfort of a guesthouse with a hot shower make this a perfect conclusion to our Pamir cycling adventure.

50 km, ⬆ 100 m / ⬇ 500 m

DAY 13-15
Three days are required to return by 4x4 vehicles to Dushanbe. These days are not just transfers but another opportunity to admire the unique landscapes of the Pamir Mountains. Our route follows the central section of the Pamir Highway, offering spectacular views of Tajikistan’s high mountain terrain. Overnight stays are planned in guesthouses in Khorugh, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan, and in Qalai Khumb. In Dushanbe, we spend the afternoon exploring the city, shopping for souvenirs, and enjoying an evening celebration marking the end of the expedition. Overnight in a hotel.

DAY 16
Return flight.

PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE:
• airline tickets to/from Tajikistan - we can help you select and buy a ticket
• bicycle air transport
• permit for entry into Gorno-Badakhshan and completion of mandatory registration (approx. USD 50)
• meals outside the cycling section (breakfasts are provided in all hotels and guesthouses)

TRANSPORT:
All transportation during the expedition will be carried out using off-road vehicles. During the cycling section, support vehicles will accompany the group each day, transporting luggage between overnight locations and serving as safety vehicles in case of breakdowns, supply needs, or other unforeseen situations.

ROUTE & DIFFICULTY:
The level of difficulty is medium to high, but without the need for advanced MTB technical skills. The route includes mountain tracks with gravel surfaces or badly damaged roads, as well as numerous climbs and descents.
The Bartang Valley is distinctive due to the river, whose water level can rise in a way that is not entirely predictable.

By signing up for this expedition, participants should be prepared for sections where pushing the bike will be necessary. It may also happen that parts of the road are flooded, blocked, or completely impassable, both for cyclists and for support vehicles. This is a low-probability scenario, but if such conditions occur, an alternative route will be used.

Due to riding at high altitudes, good overall physical and mental fitness is required. For several days, we will be staying at elevations of around 4000 m above sea level. The average daily cycling distance is 55 kilometers. In total, we will cover approximately 450 kilometers and 6000 meters of elevation gain.

BIKE:
We will be riding MTB bikes (hardtail or full suspension). Gravel bikes are not recommended unless the rider has extensive experience using such a bike in very demanding terrain. While the second part of the route, especially the Pamir Highway section, is suitable for gravel bikes, the first part of the expedition in the Bartang Valley is demanding, and the terrain will not be friendly to a rigid bike without suspension.

FOOD:
During the cycling expedition (10 days), we will be accompanied by a cook who will prepare dishes from Tajik, as well as Afghan and Kyrgyz cuisines. Outside the cycling section, meals are individual (breakfasts are provided in all hotels and guesthouses). Prices in restaurants and shops are lower than in Poland.

ACCOMMODATION:
We plan two hotel nights, in Khorog and in Dushanbe. All remaining accommodation will be in guesthouses and local homes, as well as in tents. Facilities at the accommodations, especially during the cycling section, are very basic, with shared rooms, limited access to hot water, and no European-style toilets.

At camping sites, we use our own tents. If necessary, it is possible to rent a tent locally. Personal sleeping bags are mandatory. At the camps, a kitchen tent will be available where hot meals will be prepared.

Staying overnight in tents allows for a full experience of the wild nature of the Pamirs, and evenings spent with hot tea will be a perfect opportunity to relax and share impressions from the route.

GROUP:
We travel in small groups. The minimum group size is 8 participants, and the maximum is 14.

WEATHER:
At the turn of August and September, weather conditions in the Bartang Valley are generally stable, with average daytime temperatures of around 10–20°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to 0–5°C. On Ak-Baital Pass, due to the high altitude of 4655 m above sea level, daytime temperatures typically range from 5–10°C, while at night they often fall below 0°C.

Although the weather during this period is usually quite stable, participants must always be prepared for rapidly changing mountain conditions, including rain or snow at elevations above 3000 m above sea level.
